Qarras vuMaroda, Hereksa in Legion of Translucent Emerald

The Legion of the Translucent Emerald was a lost legion. Four hundred years ago, an Empress, who worshipped Avanthe and hated Dlamelish, sent the legion to the farthest reach of the empire (Hekellu) and told them to stay awaiting further orders. The Imperial bureaucracy lost track of them and forgot. The legion stayed, and when new orders never arrived, settled down to become farmers. But they maintained the traditions and training of the legion and took good care of the weapons and armor. Word never came from the Emperor.

In 2361 A.S., Qarras joined the legion at age sixteen. Six months later, an Imperial messenger sent word that "all loyal soldiers should appear before the emissary in the town square". When the official entered the square, he expected a few dozen green warriors. He was flabbergasted to see two thousand men in shining legion armor and weapons. The lost legion had been found.

They were recalled to the central empire, fought in the war with Yan Kor (including taking part in rescuing Mirusiya from Tleku Miriya), escorted the Princess Ma'in to Tumissa during the civil war and later joined with Prince Taksuru in Bey Su during open conflict with Dhich'une. Qarras rose in the ranks to Hereksa (Lieutenant) of a Kareng of a hundred soldiers. Now, during Mirusiya's reign, they have been sent home to Jakalla for recruiting and training, for the first time in 400 years.

Qarras has always thought he was more charming than he is, always trying to have sex with women, chatting them up, and otherwise being obnoxious. Being in the temple of Dlamelish has accentuated this delusion, since it is pretty easy to find willing bed mates.

During the civil war, he faced undead troops of Dhich'une's in a fierce battle where he would have died, if not for the actions of his second, the Tirrikamu of the first semetl of his Kareng. The sergeant fought off a Mrur and dragged Qarras' body back to camp. Ever since, Qarras has owed the Tirrikamu his life. Sometimes he has flashbacks to that time, where he thinks he's fighting undead or cowering in fear from them.
